The King's Speech: Movie Review

I have never done a lot of movie reviews on here before for various reasons.  However, I thought I'd give it another go after watching The King's Speech.

Imagine standing in front of millions of people, all of which are looking up at you as a respected leader.  You step up to the microphone, which is also being broadcasted through the radio, and try to speak, yet hardly a word comes out......

When Albert, Duke of York, is suddenly thrust to the throne as King George VI, he has more to worry about than an impending world war; a slight speech impediment he has had since he was a child.

"Most of us know the feeling of having no choice but to perform a duty you feel you’re ill-equipped for; luckily for most of us, our tasks aren’t quite so high profile as those of a member of a royal family, and our failures don’t matter to a nation. In The King’s Speech, for Prince Albert, Duke of York, the pressure to overcome a prominent stammer is bad enough when performing princely duties. Doctor after doctor has examined him and tried to help him, but all to no avail.

Enter Lionel Logue.

An unlikely bond forms between the two as they work together to fix 'Bertie's' stammer.  The parts with these two were kind of humorous, in their own way.

I can't decide if I want to call them funny, emotional, or sweet. Maybe all three?  Logue does an amazing job to help Albert overcome his stammer.  His methods are very logical and straightforward.

I think this movie did such an amazing job on showing hard work, perseverance, and team work.

Elizabeth, Albert's wife, is quite a character.  She was an amazing help meet to Albert in so many ways. 

She was right there for him the whole time, backing him up, fighting his fights, sharing his sorrows, and just being there as a friend.  She was not pushy during the speech lessons, but instead just encouraged him to keep going.

The King's Speech had me in tears at several points.  His last speech in the movie was amazing (and definitely brought the tears rolling!), as well as the response from everyone afterwards.  Wow.

Colin Firth was an amazing actor.  I already liked him from A&E's Pride and Prejudice (played Mr. Darcy), but this definitely set him in tops for me.  To be able to do this kind of acting is just amazing.

Helena Bonham Carter played Elizabeth. I have never seen her on screen before, though any of you who have seen any of the Harry Potter movies will be familiar with her.

Lionel Logue was done by the amazing Geoffry Rush (who voiced Virgil the seagull in Finding Nemo).

It was especially fun to see Jennifer Ehle come into play as Logue's wife, Myrtle. 

In case any of you don't know, Ehle played opposite of Firth in Pride and Prejudice.   So, naturally, it was quite funny when, at one part, Myrtle is introduced to the King, she turns, in astonishment. (and we all ad-libbed for her) "Mr. Darcy? When did you become king??" haha!

This movie was rated R for language, but thankfully most of it was just during one scene, which you could mute. :-)

I think this movie is one I would watch again, and I rate it 4 out of 5 stars.  If you have seen it, please drop your thoughts in the comment box! I'd love to hear what you think.  And if you haven't seen it, but want to, go watch it, then let me know what you think. lol!

Day 24: A movie no one would expect me to love

Inception.   Inception was a new sci-fi movie that just came out recently.  It was definitely a neat movie, though I did NOT like it when I first saw it.  I guess it just grew on me... "He knew you'd come back" (quote from movie) definitely describes me! I pondered over the movie and soon wanted to watch it again to try and figure it out.  I am really not much into sci-fi... that is, if it isn't too scary! 

The movie Inception was actually pretty good.  I can only think of a couple scenes where they cursed (surprise, surprise).  I am just going to go and edit it out of our copy, though, as the rest of the movie was amazing.  There were also a few scenes where a lady is wearing some clothes that aren't extremely modest... Still, not as bad as some out there!

So, no one would really expect me to like this movie, but I do! :-)

Day 4: My Favorite TV Show

Well, first off, we don't have TV.. We have the screen, so we can watch movies, but we don't have stations or any thing...  However, we have been able to get TV shows on DVD or Netflix... so, mine is probably George Burns and Gracie Allen show.  They were an extremely funny couple on TV and fun to watch.  She is kind of the Amelia Bedelia type on the show, but an extremely bright person in real life.  Of the ones I have watched, I am pretty sure they were clean....

Day 2: Favorite Movie

For day two of the 30 day challenge, I have to put up my favorite movie.  I am really having a hard time with this one! I am still sitting here trying to decide... Pride and Predjudice?  Inception?...... ok, I think I decided.  My all time favorite movie is.......*drum roll*

Pendragon: A Sword of his Father

This movie was done by home schoolers... and it was really good!!  The message in it was really good, and the filming and acting was really good!!  Totally blew me away. My brother and I having gotten into movie making mood lately, so this was extremely encouraging and inspiring!

Please keep my mother in your prayers. She is flying out to California to help some friends drive down (they are moving down here-back down here, actually. They used to live here, moved to CA, and are now moving back!) Any way, I guess she had an hour delay in Pheonix, AZ, so pray that all will go well with her and that she and the other family will be safe driving down.  Mr. will be driving the moving truck and Mrs. and Mom will be driving the big van with all the kids.  They are scheduled to arrive tomorrow.  Thank you!

Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader

For Rebecca's birthday, she requested that we go and see the new Narnia movie, Voyage of the Dawn Treader.

After the disappointment of Prince Caspian, we were a little skeptical, but tried to hope for the best.  We were truly surprised.  Voyage of the Dawn Treader turned out much better than I expected! They actually kept to the book fairly well (maybe added in a few things, but they weren't too out of the story line).  Apparently, after Caspian was released, they got a lot of complaints from Fans.  So, they straightened their act and did a MUCH better job on Treader.  It was actually very fun to watch.  They added lots of humor, but there are a few scary parts, so I wouldn't recommend it for younger children.

They had some very good themes in the movie that I don't really remember in the book.  Lucy struggled with wanting to be prettier than she really was.  She had to learn that she is just how she needs to be.  Edmond struggled with wanting to be over others and not be told what to do.  He had to over come that as well.

I must say that my favorite character was probably Eustace. Not because he is that great of a character (though really, it is fun to see him change into a better person) but because they did a GREAT job depicting him in the movie. Whoever the actor was did a wonderful job.

I hope that they get a big response from this movie (in a good way) to encourage them to make the others follow the books!  Douglass Gresham wants to do Silver Chair next, so I hope to see that one coming out in the future.

Liem Neeson (the voice of Aslan) was interviewed about the movie (or one of the movies) and, sadly, said that Aslan just represented God, Budda, Mohammed, etc, instead of just the One True God.  Gresham, however, was bold enough to get up and say that, no, Aslan represented God and God only.  Besides, Budda didn't rise from the dead and neither did Mohammed (Good for him!!).

All in all, I would rate it 4 out of 5 stars and would recommend that you watch it, too!
